abstract = {ChatGPT Search was launched on October 31 by OpenAI as a new AI-powered search engine. Among its features, it stands out for its ability to retrieve information from various online sources, including scholarly databases, which potentially allows the use of this tool for academic tasks, both quantitative and qualitative. To test its features, five academic tasks are designed: two quantitative (collecting hit count estimates from Google Search and scraping bibliometric indicators from ResearchGate); two qualitative tasks (performing a narrative synthesis of an academic topic and generating a brief academic author profile), and a mixed task (identifying, collecting and describing a list of publications from Google Scholar Profiles). The results show the inability of ChatGPT Search to conduct quantitative tasks correctly, fabricating the results (hallucination). Qualitative tasks are performed with better results; however, errors are detected, which prevent recommending the tool without manual analysis and refinement. Finally, the ability to generate links to scientific publications can open up competition among academic sites to be mentioned in the ChatGPT Search responses, giving rise to Academic Generative Engine Optimization (A-GEO).},

abstract = {Given the importance of Google Search in generating visits to institutional repositories (IR), a lack of visibility in search engine results pages can hinder the possibility of their publications being found, read, downloaded, and, eventually, cited. To address this, institutions need to evaluate the visibility of their repositories to determine what actions might be implemented to enhance them. However, measuring the search engine optimization (SEO) visibility of IRs requires a highly accurate, technically feasible method. This study constitutes the first attempt to design such a method, specifically applied here to measuring the IR visibility of Spain’s national university system in Google Search based on a set of SEO-based metrics derived from the Ubersuggest SEO tool. A comprehensive dataset spanning three months and comprising 217,589 bibliographic records and 316,899 organic keywords is used as a baseline. Our findings show that many records deposited in these repositories are not ranked among the top positions in Google Search results, and that the most visible records are mainly academic works (theses and dissertations) written in Spanish in the Humanities and Social Sciences. However, most visits are generated by a small number of records. All in all, our results call into question the role played by IRs in attracting readers via Google Search to the institutions’ scientific heritage and serve to underscore the prevailing emphasis within IRs on preservation as opposed to online dissemination. Potential improvements might be achieved using enhanced metadata schemes and normalized description practices, as well as by adopting other actionable insights that can strengthen the online visibility of IRs. This study increases understanding of the role played by web indicators in assessing the web-based impact of research outputs deposited in IRs, and should be of particular interest for a range of stakeholders, including open access and open science advocates, research agencies, library practitioners, repository developers, and website administrators.},

We have analyzed 237,336 records from eight of the world’s most famous marathons between 2016 and 2019. Our study takes into account the device model, family, and type. We have found that Garmin devices are the most widely used in this type of race, accounting for more than 75% of the records. Women generally prefer more economical, non-specific, and lighter devices, while men increasingly use specialized trail and multisport devices. Moreover, we have observed differences in device preferences among different age groups and performance levels. The manufacturers of this type of technology are making strides toward sustainability, with a focus on energy efficiency, sustainable materials, durability, environmental certifications, and recycling programs.},

abstract = {The document 'Foundations of Narrative Bibliometrics' provides an analysis of the evolution of scientific assessment, highlighting the influence of manifestos such as DORA and CoARA in shaping ethical and responsible practices in academia, as well as their assimilation by Spanish scientific policies. It connects this context with the contributions of evaluative bibliometrics, emphasising the transition towards a more integrative approach that advocates for a balance between quantitative and qualitative methods in research evaluation. Furthermore, it underscores how the Narrative Curriculum has emerged as one of the fundamental tools in new evaluation processes, as it allows for the description of the complexity and context of academic achievements. Narrative Bibliometrics is proposed, defined as the use of bibliometric indicators to generate stories that support the defence and exposition of a scientific curriculum and/or its individual contributions within the framework of a scientific evaluation process, which demands narratives. To introduce the reader, it presents, in a non-exhaustive manner, sources, indicators, and practical cases for effectively applying Narrative Bibliometrics in various scientific evaluation contexts. Hence, this document contributes to the responsible use of bibliometric indicators, serving as a tool for evaluators and researchers.},

abstract = {Citizen Science (CS) is related to public engagement in scientific research. The tasks in which the citizens can be involved are diverse and can range from data collection and tagging images to participation in the planning and research design. However, little is known about the involvement degree of the citizens to CS projects, and the contribution of those projects to the advancement of knowledge (e.g. scientific outcomes). This study aims to gain a better understanding by analysing the SciStarter database. A total of 2,346 CS projects were identified, mainly from Ecology and Environmental Sciences. Of these projects, 91% show low participation of the citizens (Level 1 "citizens as sensors" and 2 "citizens as interpreters", from Haklay's scale). In terms of scientific output, 918 papers indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) were identified. The most prolific projects were found to have lower levels of citizen involvement, specifically at Levels 1 and 2.},

abstract = {The social live streaming service Twitch was launched in 2008 as Justin.tv, rebranded as Twitch Interactive in 2011, and acquired by Amazon in 2014. Although launched originally as a portal to broadcast videogames, Twitch currently hosts a wide range of content, including science and technology channels. Yet, despite growing interest in this online video sharing platform, Twitch’s potential for the study of science videos has been underexploited to date. This paper seeks to go some way to remedying this by studying the potential of Twitch as a data source for social media academic metrics. To do so, a scientometrics-inspired framework (the OBA framework) is proposed to integrate the analysis of Twitch, science videos and research organizations under a common conceptual space. Then, a science-related Twitch channel — National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) — is used as a case study. We analyse 197 videos published by NASA between March 2017 and December 2022, as well as 51,935 clips created from NASA videos. Data were collected from the official Twitch API, which is also analysed to identify the units and metrics available and the channel’s performance in retrospective quantitative studies (i.e., non-live broadcasts). The results show that Twitch allows in-depth metric analyses of science videos to be undertaken, facilitating identification of both the activity and output-level impact of a scientific organization such as NASA. However, the Twitch API presents a few constraints, due, in the main, to the limited availability of many metrics that are restricted in time range, quantity, accuracy, or access, and which as such limit comprehensive retrospective studies. Despite these technical limitations, it is estimated that Twitch offers considerable potential for the study of science-related activity. The OBA model proposed facilitates the analysis of the activity of specific scientific agents (not only organizations but journals or other aggregates) under a conceptual framework based on approaches applied in quantitative studies of science.},

abstract = {In 2019, after decades of attempting to raise awareness of the need to take action, the climate movement saw a surge in its ability to mobilize citizens and influence the political agenda. A younger generation leading the movement has given renewed vigour to the movement’s discourse by emphasising the need to act immediately by expressing the idea of emergency. This article suggests that this notion, one that is central to the current youth climate movement, includes an acceleration of time and a discourse based on hope. These ideas have worked as an activator of action complementing or nuancing narratives about future and climate change. The analysis of the discourse of Fridays For Future Barcelona on social media (Twitter and Instagram) with a mixed methods approach shows first the centrality of the notion of emergency in the public discourse of the movement and its role in making the future seem not so distant. Secondly, it shows how the use of emergency speech is linked to a positive view of the future and to a generational discourse. And, finally, it has been detected that using emergency speech together with references to a hopeful future increases the impact of the movement’s social media posts.},

abstract = {Much debate has been around the misapplication of metrics in research assessment. As a result of this concern, the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) was launched, an initiative that caused opposing viewpoints. However, the discussion topics about DORA have not been formally identified, especially in participatory environments outside the scholarly communication process, such as social networks. This paper contributes to that end by analyzing 20,717 DORA-related tweets published from 2015 to 2022. The results show an increasing volume of tweets, mainly promotional and informative, but with limited participation of users, either commenting or engaging with the tweets, generating a scarcely polarized conversation driven primarily by a few DORA promoters. While a varied list of discussion topics is found (especially "Open science and research assessment," "Academics career assessment & innovation," and "Journal Impact Factor"), the DORA debate appears as part of broader conversations (research evaluation, open science). Further studies are needed to check whether these results are restricted to Twitter or reveal more general patterns. The findings might interest the different evaluators and evaluated agents regarding their interests and concerns around the reforms in the research evaluation.},

To do this, 116 k randomly selected bibliographic records from Crossref were used as a baseline. API endpoints and web scraping were used to query each database. The results show that coverage differences are mainly caused by the way each service builds their databases. While classic bibliographic databases ingest almost the exact same content from Crossref (Lens and Scilit miss 0.1% and 0.2% of the records, respectively), academic search engines present lower coverage (Google Scholar does not find: 9.8%, Semantic Scholar: 10%, and Microsoft Academic: 12%). Coverage differences are mainly attributed to external factors, such as web accessibility and robot exclusion policies (39.2%–46%), and internal requirements that exclude secondary content (6.5%–11.6%). In the case of Dimensions, the only classic bibliographic database with the lowest coverage (7.6%), internal selection criteria such as the indexation of full books instead of book chapters (65%) and the exclusion of secondary content (15%) are the main motives of missing publications.},

abstract = {Press releases about scholarly news are brief statements provided in advance to the press, including a description of the most relevant findings of one or more accepted scientific publications, usually under the condition that journalists will adhere to an embargo until the publication date. The existence of centralized platforms such as EurekAlert! allows press releases to be dissemi-nated online as independent news articles. Press releases can include addition-al material (e.g., interviews, commentaries, explanatory tables, figures, media, recommended readings), which turn them into online objects with analytical value of their own. The objective of this work is to illustrate how press releases can be quantitatively analyzed applying similar tools and approaches as those applied in scientometric research (SCI). To achieve this goal, a scientometric-inspired analytical framework is proposed based on the formulation of spaces of interaction of objects, actors, and impacts. As such, the framework proposed considers press releases as science communication (SCO) objects, produced by different SCO actors (e.g., journalists), and the subject of receiving impact (e.g., tweets, links). To carry out this analysis, all press releases published by Eure-kAlert! from 1996 until 2021 (455,703 press releases), all tweets including at least one URL referring to a EurekAlert! press release (1,364,563 tweets), and all webpages with at least one URL referring to a EurekAlert! press release (54,089,233 webpages) have been studied. We argue that the large volume of press releases published and their online dissemination make these objects relevant in the measurement of SCO-SCI interactions.},

abstract = {This is the last report of the project “Virtual ethnography with Latin Kings”, aimed to analyze the presence of this street group on the social media. Our first report provided a background study about how youth street groups are studied online by the scientific community. Our second deliverable consisted of raw data gathered from social media. This last deliverable updates the data previously collected and carries out a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data. The main objectives are as follows: first, to detect the social media presence of Latin King members; second, to better understand how Latin Kings use the social media under study; third, to determine how Latin Kings members interact within these social media; and fourth, to ascertain what are the main elements that describe the cultural construction of the Latin Kings through their representations, self-representations and practices on social media. Thus, the study presented here provides an overview of the presence and content generation of the Latin Kings street group in the virtual sphere. In contrast to previous ethnographies with this community, the current approach comes from the knowledge of traditional ethnography that had been done previously by other authors and the principal investigator of the TRANSGANG ERC project in order to add a new layer corresponding to the online realm. A virtual ethnography has been undertaken mixing quantitative and qualitative methods that include social network analysis, computational social science, content analysis and informetrics. This report provides a better understanding of the Latin King community by analyzing social media content in which they actively decided to be involved, in contrast to traditional media content portrayals. Our first approach to the study of youth street groups online offers a system and method of analysis that allows us to find identity traces and communicative trends among the Latin King community in Youtube. Although the procedure can be refined and extended to other contexts (countries and social media platforms), we believe that it points in the right direction to a non-criminalized approach to the study of youth street groups online and that we have faced some of the challenges previously detected. The findings obtained should be of interest to gang scholars and contribute to furthering knowledge in the research area.},

abstract = {Carbon footprint (CF) research has received increasing attention in recent years, as evidenced by a rise in publications and citations, reflecting a growing concern for the environmental impact of human activities. However, the alignment of this scientific literature with the three dimensions of sustainability performance provided by the TBL paradigm (people, planet, and profit) has received limited attention. This study addresses this research gap by undertaking a large-scale bibliometric analysis of 9032 Web of Science (WoS) publications from 1992 to 2020. At the macro (journals) and micro (papers) levels, a methodology approach to classify research publications according to TBL dimensions was designed. The results indicate that the output and impact of CF research are balanced with respect to the environmental (planet) and economic (prosperity/profit) dimensions, while the social impact is balanced with respect to the people+profit dimensions. Other than that, “Affordable and Clean Energy” (3761 publications) and “Climate Action” (3091 publications) are the most frequently represented (and interconnected) objectives. The results obtained contribute to a greater understanding of the contribution of CF research to the attainment of the SDGs.},

abstract = {Our main objective is to understand the way young women who participate in cultural groups and come from different social economic profiles integrate the feminist discourse in different actions, and how they appropriate this discourse in their daily lives and their cultural context. This qualitative research project combines different methods, such as observation, a socioeconomic questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, life stories, autobiographical capsules and the analysis of their activity in social networks. The research has made it possible to reach conclusions in relation to gender identity and the feminist discourses and experiences of the interviewees, basically linked to the importance of their personal situation, their interpersonal relationships, the cultural group in which they participate and the way in which they express it through audiovisual self-narratives and self-representations on Instagram. Feminist activism in recent years and the influence of others, in many cases members of the cultural group in which they participate, have helped the interviewees get a critical awareness and the need to contribute to change, even in their day-to-day lives. Self-portrayals on social media, on the other hand, are contradictory to this critique and place most girls in a post-feminist position.},

abstract = {Although funding is essential for some types of research and beneficial for others, it may constrain academic choice and creativity. Thus, it is important to check whether it ever seems unnecessary. Here we investigate whether funded U.K. research tends to be higher quality in all fields and for all major research funders. Based on peer review quality scores for 113,877 articles from all fields in the U.K.’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, we estimate that there are substantial disciplinary differences in the proportion of funded journal articles, from Theology and Religious Studies (16%+) to Biological Sciences (91%+). The results suggest that funded research is likely to be of higher quality overall, for all the largest research funders, and for 30 out of 34 REF Units of Assessment (disciplines or sets of disciplines), even after factoring out research team size. There are differences between funders in the average quality of the research supported, however. Funding seems particularly associated with higher research quality in health-related fields. The results do not show cause and effect and do not take into account the amount of funding received but are consistent with funding either improving research quality or being won by high-quality researchers or projects.},

abstract = {This article carries out a systematic review of the literature analysing the following new journalistic formats: structured journalism, immersive journalism, 360° video reports, virtual reality and augmented reality applied to journalism, newsgames and docugames. To do so, the scientific production examining these formats is first analysed to determine the academic impact of these studies, while identifying their characteristics and tracking their evolution over time. Second, the leading researchers in this field are identified and interviewed to ascertain their opinion about the future of journalism and changing trends in journalistic formats. The results show that the number of academic publications about journalistic innovation peaked in 2019, above all in the three journals – Digital Journalism, Journalism Practice and Profesional de la Información – that lead the way in this discipline. The 23 academics interviewed reported that innovation impacts primarily on four aspects of journalism: information and content; audience; methods and resources and news media companies.},
